OK. While talking to Fluo today, I realised that we really should be trying to work on aspects of the game other than graphics. Then I really realised- DC and Delta have pretty much disappeared off the face of the Earth. Now, how would we work on these things without an engine?
We should change. At least for now.
An engine change will cut out the MMO and Global Trades sections, two points vital to the uniqueness of this game, but we don't need that just yet. I say we should at least try a game on another engine. I would suggest PMXP, but how lackluster. We need programming power, so I suggest Sphere. All we'd need is help from an experienced Sphere programmer like Booda.
What do you all think?

I agree. I think if we EVER want to finish this game we'll have to start soon, otherwise more and more people will disappear or loose interest. But what i want to know is, do we have enough people who can program? I can't, the only thing i ever made was a charmander who could walk left/right/up/down in game maker, that's it. And that was a few years ago But yea if we DO have enough poeple i REALLY think we should start on somethin soon, the sooner the better.

Finally I have a purpose! I'm good (Well, I atleast know basic RGSS) with RMXP and I'm also a member of RMXP.net. There's a guy working on a browser based MMO Engine for RMXP. He's pretty fast and hopefully he'll be done with it soon.

I think it is about time we just ditch PO... We haven't made much progress because we have been waiting for them. So perhaps now is the time to switch to something else.

And basically, with all the little custom ideas it would be nice to switch to an engine with the most flexibility..I'd say Sphere over RMXP, but it's likely more difficult...
And I'm not sure if it's even possible to get Sphere online.

technically you could use boodas exact engine and just make a modification of call of latios with your new region and storyline/ pokemon, but you would obviously need his permission. That would be the quickest best way to get this game done but im not sure if this is possible.

So it's the PO stuff that's been making all this stuff not go ... very quickly? Oh... ok - i understand. well if holdup on the po engine is a problem, I think you should definitely consider switching

However, what of me, celebi and FMY? The engine should really be multi-platform. Otherwise, we're screwed. Actually, I have Virtual PC, so I'm not, but I can't use it without the audio glitching, and it's horribly slow. So anyway.

Oh I hate virtual PC - if MS makes a product for mac, they better make it right. VPC just don't cut it for me. If you can't make the game for Macintosh + Windows what do you expect me and others to do!! (just get a dell) lol who cares about linux... Yeah, anyways...

I've been researching RMXP a lot lately, and I think we would we be way better off switching to it now. We can at least get the mapping done, and I'm sure we could either build a battle system off of the starter kit or get someone who can actually code to fork one over. With a little bit of work, we could actually get this game up and running soon. Oh, and for the record, Sphere is absolutely not an option, unless we are allowed to use Booda's system. It's overall method of game-making is a lot less friendly to the uninitiated. Actually, if we got the tilesets and un-gridded and added to the standard ripped tiles, we could start mapping now. From what I can tell, by the time we're finished mapping, we'll have a decent battle system anyway. Stuff you should have: RPG Maker XP www.crankeye.com/index.php?page=downloadsPokemon RMXP Starter Kit www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=49825Extra Ripped Tiles www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=49139

It seems Sphere works on Windows and Linux, but probably not on Mac. Looking through their forums, I see that one person is porting it, but I have no idea how long it'll take him.
You could also look at other game development toolkits. Pygame (pygame.org) is a set of python libraries to make games. Python is a multi-platform, very well established and easy to use standalone scripting language. It can do whatever you need it to, although it won't be as performant as if you made it in, say, C++.
As far as I can see, RMXP itself isn't portable, but the scripting language it uses (Ruby) is, so if you want to make it work on mac or linux, it may be possible to reuse the scripts. I've seen a couple portable ruby frameworks like RUDL or gosu, though I haven't tried any of them.
In any case, if you want quality, you'll have to dive into coding. You don't need to use C or C++ (you'd never finish it and given the small scale of the project, it'd be overkill), but there are many nice high level languages that can do the job: Python, Ruby, Lua or even Flash come to mind. Scheme is pretty nice as well (but more academical) because it's easy to make specialized languages with it. Sphere uses JavaScript. So what I suggest you to do is pick a language, search for nice bindings to graphics libraries (wxWidgets, Qt, GTK+, SDL, or game libraries like pygame or sphere), follow the tutorials, then do real coding.
If I was to do it, my main picks would be ruby+gosu, pygame or scheme. What is good for me isn't necessarily good for you, though.

Well, I'd say "Let's go for Python+pygame", since I'm learning Python at the moment. Or Sphere, but then we'll have to find a way to make it work on mac.
We need programmers too! I won't be able to do it alone. Fluo, you're welcome to do it by the way, or to help.
