I would really recommend your using GIMP. It's free, and downloading it isn't going to give you a virus. I can attest to that.

Paint Shop Pro is the best. It has a 2 month trial. If you have a crack, you can use it forever without paying.

Paint Shop Pro is the best. It has a 2 month trial. If you have a crack, you can use it forever without paying. GIMP is actually more extensive, and it's not illegal to use it either. It gets updated regularly, too. If you want the best program and don't care about money, Photoshop is the best, honestly. I have PS 6 at home, but I don't have a copy here at school.

You obviously don't know how to use it. Maybe I'll put up a tutorial for that, too. It takes some getting used to, because it's so much better than Paint.

PSP is awful on all accounts... Having used Photoshop and Flash for a long while, I can't use Paint at all. The interface is really really bad.
Fireworks is very good for spriting. Photoshop's not bad either T; if you click on the brush, then there's the tool options in a drop-down menu, you can change it to pencil, and it'll have a hard edge. Make it one pixel and you have your spriting tool. You can also adjust the hue on a layer (or selection) if you want to recolour things quickly. The menu is on the layers palette, it's like a circle split in half (one dark and one light). Then the Hue and Saturation one.

The Photoshop pencil sucks! Photoshop is good just for editing images.

If you say so :/ I sprited Chapica on Photoshop. The zoomy panel works very nicely; I can see the piece at 100% and zoom in at the same time.

The Photoshop pencil sucks! Photoshop is good just for editing images. No, it doesn't. You can use the scroll wheel of your mouse to zoom in up to 1600% of the image's size. There's absolutely NO way it can suck unless you have a major problem keeping your hand still. Another wonderful feature that BonzaiRob touched on is the use of layers. If you want to edit one portion of a sprite at one time, you can set that part of the image to a new layer so the rest of the image is unaffected by what you're doing. If you're dissatisfied with it, you can delete it without having any worries on messing up what you've already got. You can also edit by color selection, which makes recoloring a breeze. And, for the record, Photoshop is not just good for editing images. It's also really handy for graphic arts. You can make really great scratch images and abstract art with the feature that Photoshop (GIMP has this, too) has called Filters.

I know. But in PSP you can scroll it up to 5000%!

You really, really don't need a pixel to fill the screen. Levels of zoom aren't how good a product is; just how much i can multiply the image's size by. Photoshop is industry standard, people use it for a reason: It's the best product of this sort on the market. I use Photoshop to sketch into the computer with my tablet, because I can get a good pencil effect with a 50% brush. I also use it to paint, to make adverts to go in magazines, to export graphics for the web, everything except animation really. The only thing I've not really got the hang of is vector, but I can use Flash for that. Layers go without saying. It's hard to use at first, but layers are ridiculously useful. If you're not using layers, you're missing out. Seriously.

I agree with you on that. It isn't necessary for a pixel to fill the screen. I was only saying that you don't have to stare hard at the screen like you do with Paint when you zoom in, because Paint only has one level of zoom.
And I also designed my band's logo with Photoshop, and it turned out very well.

Paint has more than one level of zoom. There is 1x, 2x, 6x, and 8x. Or maybe you have a different version than me? :/ Mine is just called Paint. It came with Windows XP.

MLS is right. Maybe the former versions or Vista have Paint with one zoom level.

Yeah, it looks like they fixed it in Vista. XP and below has only one level of zoom. My mistake.

I have XP, and I'll tend to go to Gale's side, since Gale is more expert.

I wouldn't agree with me simply because I have experience. Newer versions of XP and Vista all have more than one level of zoom. I checked the computer I'm currently using (which is a Vista machine) and it has multiple zoom levels.
