PNGs have an entire CHANNEL devoted to transparency. JPGs have Red, Blue and Green channels, PNGs have Red, Blue, Green and Alpha. So instead of just having one extra colour for transparency, PNGs can be slightly transparent, or very transparent, etc. The transparency usually goes in percentage. Of course, if you use an outdated browser like IE then you can't see it, but it's still there. Let's see if my examples are still uploaded... Yes. GIF image: PNG image: IE users.. I dunno if you'll see a difference or what. Might look strange. To everyone else, the second image fades smoothly into the board's background WHATEVER colour it is. And now you know why PT is using PNGs. Just some extra notes: Bonzai's comparing GIFs to 24bit-PNGs (the standard PNGs). 24bit PNGs indeed hav a complete transparency layer and can blend into the background. IE always displays that transparency in light gray in IE 6 or older but that's indeed an IE flaw. It can however show the transparency in 8 bit PNGs, but these only have GIF like transparency. The big difference between 8bit PNGs and GIFs is that 8bit PNGs can be even smaller, but can't be animated. In the JEPE engine we support both GIF and PNG, so you can really choose which file type you use. The same counts for images you upload to the wiki. It doesn't really matter.
